Chinese Combo Serves Up Good Service, Fresh, Hot Food
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

Marshall Phou has made few changes throughout the past 13 years; he believes if the food is good and people like it enough to keep coming back, he must be doing something right.

Phou is the owner of a successful fast-food restaurant called Chinese Combo that has been feeding the hungry patrons of Signal Hill and the surrounding Long Beach area for more than a decade.

Although he has on occasion tried to add new dishes, they've rarely proved to be as popular as the array of items that have been on his menu since the beginning. One recent exception, however, has been the addition of baked salmon, which is available Fridays and Mondays.

Although the line moves fast during a busy lunch rush thanks to the well-stocked steam table, which is continually being replenished with fresh batches, there are a couple of things on the menu that take a few extra minutes; their wonton soup, shrimp fried rice, pork fried rice and combination fried rice are made to order, and they're all worth the wait.

Although it's sometimes tough choosing from among Chinese Combo's many attractive dishes, their best combo comes with every plate: generous portions at frugal prices.

Phou says great customer service is one of the things his customers have come to expect and appreciate. "They tell us we treat them right and [we're] nice people here," he says. "If they come late in the afternoon and they don't like the way [a particular dish] looks, we'll make another one."

In general, Phou prefers to focus his energy on the quality and consistency of his restaurant. The food is made from the freshest ingredients available, the dining area is always kept clean and comfortable, and Marshall and his staff are as friendly as they come.

"We want to make them happy," Phou said. "And keep them happy."

Chinese Combo is located at 2160 East Willow Street in Signal Hill near the Petsmart. They're open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call (562) 424-2448.
