From Memories to Marketing, Coast Looks at Big Picture
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer
Whether they're new parents or grandparents, few things warm the hearts of family members more than images of their loved ones. That's why Coast Video Services has adopted the motto, "Cutting edge technology, old-fashioned service."
Larry Smith started Coast Video Services just more than a year ago, but the ex-helicopter pilot has been shooting and editing video for several decades. Today, his company provides a range of services including video production, transfer, duplication and conversion.
Coast Video specializes in creating digital slide shows using the original photographs or slides. The slide shows can even be set to music, making them endearing entertainment for events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, graduations, reunions, holidays or just a nice Sunday dinner with the family. The images are burned onto CD/DVDs for easy viewing and convenient storage.
Smith can also create CD/DVD transfers of 8mm, Super 8 transfer, VHS, DVD, Hi8, Mini DV, DV, as well as international conversions. Home movies can be brought down from the attic or in from the garage and be played on any DVD player. The digital format will not deteriorate the way film does, and also protects the original copy from additional wear.
Smith is confident in the quality of his work, partly because of his collection of high-end equipment. He performs all jobs on the premises, so clients can rest assured that their valuable keepsakes are safe from becoming lost in delivery.
In addition to transfer and duplication, Coast Video Services makes and edits video for marketing purposes.
Smith learned to shoot video from a coworker while flying for an ABC Network Philadelphia affiliate in the 1970s.
"I taught him how to fly a helicopter, and he showed me how to shoot video," remembers Smith.
Since then, his applications of the skill have been as unconventional as his original introduction to the art; Later, as a commercial realtor, he shot aerial videos of his properties and passed them out to potential buyers, a practice he found to be very effective.
With Coast Video, Smith continues to eek out innovative uses for the medium. His video resumes have helped students gain college admittance and win scholarships. He produces video business cards and self-contained video suitable for Web sites. He even makes home-inventory videos to make insurance claims more thorough in case of loss or damage.
"It's a marketing tool for anyone who wants to promote themselves, that has a story to tell," Smith said. "What business couldn't use that?"
