Foamables Furniture Puts Fun in Functional
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer
Most parents can't wait to see their kids take their first steps. As soon as those tiny feet hit the ground, however, moms and dads suddenly become acutely aware of all the hard surfaces and dangerous corners that perpetually seem to make their way into baby's wobbly path.
Foamables is a new product in the market of children's furniture. The lightweight but durable pieces are soft and have no sharp edges, which make them perfect for toddlers who are still learning to keep their balance. But the best part about the product - its versatility.
Sets can be taken apart and put together in various configurations. An activity table reassembles to make a doll's cradle, fire truck, airplane and more; a learning chair becomes a rocking chair complete with a space for books and even a cup holder; bookcases can be stacked for safe, fun storage, and a multipurpose desk easily converts to a toy box. The range is as limitless as a child's imagination.
"This furniture is like a giant toy," said Suzanne Mills-Winkler, president of Dynamic Designworks Inc., a Signal Hill design house that has been working in conjunction with Foamables' creators, Jill Karrenbrock and Terry Grill, to bring the product to the public.
With no screws, small parts or need for tools that would make assembly difficult or dangerous for small children, parents and kids can have the furniture put together in just minutes, or they can experiment with the endless configurations made possible with the patented Snugfit Wonder Foam.
Made from environmentally friendly materials, the colorful pieces that fit together to make Foamables furniture come packaged in mesh bags that make storage easy when not in use. There are also sets of numbers and letters that can be used on their own or as accessories with the furniture.
"It's very interactive," said Mills-Winker. "The kids can play and just have fun with it."
Foamables is currently available through the Web site, www.Foamables.com, but some of the more popular pieces can be seen on display at Sweet Treasures Kids, located at 4226 Atlantic Avenue in Bixby Knolls. Sweet Treasures also carries the full Foamables catalogue and orders can usually be filled within days.
In addition to getting the product directly into homes, Mills-Winkler hopes to educate pre-schools and daycare centers about the advantages of a line of children's furniture that is safe, fun and, not least of all, functional.
"We're trying to get the word out about Foamables because we really believe in it," Mills-Winkler said. "I think it's really important for children to have something that stretches their creativity."
