New LocationProvides Serene Setting for
Ohai Acupunture Group
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

On Feb. 1 the Ohai Acupuncture Group moved into Bixby Knolls Medical Center from its former Long Beach location on Palo Verde Avenue. The new location, with its peaceful courtyard and cozy clinic, provides the comforting environment required to effectively administer the treatments of traditional Chinese medicine.

Iling Sun, LAC, is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist who has been practicing in Long Beach for more than 15 years. She gives lectures on oriental medicine and acupuncture topics throughout Southern California. Sun has also published numerous professional articles on the subject of Chinese medicine. While her specialty is acupuncture, she is also highly qualified in Chinese herbal therapy and acupressure.

Dr. Dennis Chen MD, INC, also practices at the clinic and specializes in pain management.

Acupuncture is a 5,000-year-old Chinese tradition. In modern acupuncture therapy sterilized, micro-thin needles are inserted in the body to regulate qi (pronounced chee) throughout the body. The traditional explanation for how acupuncture works relies on the traditional Chinese explanation of what causes disease; when yin and yang are imbalanced in particular organs, or when the flow of qi within the channels is obstructed, the patient feels sick or senses pain.

The practitioner of Chinese medicine determines what is out of balance by asking questions and making observations about the patient. Once it is known where the flow of qi is obstructed, the practitioner consults traditional theories to decide which herbs or needles should be used in treating the patient.

The Ohai Acupuncture Group is focused on healing the root causes of the patient's health problems. Their mission, according to Sun, is to provide the patients with an environment where treatment is rendered by caring hands. Sun addresses health issues with a holistic approach, incorporating acupuncture (only disposable needles are used) and Chinese herbal medicine, nutrition and life-style counseling.

The clinic offers a broad range of Chinese herbal treatments. These treatments can be used to treat or prevent diseases, or even for cosmetic reasons.

"I have all types of people coming [for treatment]," said Sun. "We treat a lot of [patient's for] pain, migraine headaches, PMS, sciatica, infertility, insomnia, weight control, even chocolate addiction."

Initial consultations at the Ohai Acupuncture Group are free. Their "get acquainted" offer is available for first-time patients: free consultation and $30 for the first treatment.

The Ohai Acupuncture Group is located in the Bixby Knolls Medical Center at 925 East San Antonio Drive, Suite 16. For more information, call (562) 423-2288.
