Pet sitter gives animals loving care, Twenty Four Seven
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

After 23 years of working behind a desk, Rick Ybarra is ready for a change. The 52-year-old pension analyst has been moonlighting as a dog walker and house sitter for the last six years, but this year he's ready to get serious about his second career; Ybarra has just begun his new business venture, Twenty Four Seven Pet Sitting and Walking.

After his doctor recommended he get more exercise, Ybarra increased his client base. "It's very good because I feel a lot healthier just this month alone walking six hours a day," says Ybarra. And he's sharing his new found good health with his four legged friends.

A longtime pet owner himself, Ybarra understands the important roles exercise and attention play in raising a healthy, happy pet. "The dogs are just happier," says Ybarra. "They're in a better mood and they're healthier."

Twenty Four Seven accommodates the busy schedule of pet owners who work long hours or travel often. His services include walking, feeding, transporting animals to veterinary or groomer appointments and administering medication, including injections. While clients are out of town, Ybarra offers overnight companionship for pets and performs house-sitting tasks to keep homes safe and tidy.

Each visit is catered to the needs of the pet and its owner. "Some people want me to stay an hour with the dogs playing with them in the backyard," says Ybarra. "Others [will have] me take [the dogs] for a walk. Some others want me to come in, feed the dog, make sure they're OK, let him out and leave within the half-hour. It all depends on what the people want."

Whether he stops by for a daytime visit or an overnight stay, Ybarra fastidiously keeps his clients updated on the well being of their pets. He leaves daily reports cataloging the animal's habits and behavior. If the pet is sick and symptoms are slow to show, Ybarra's daily log could help catch an illness before it progresses to a more serious stage.

If asked what he most likes about his new business, Ybarra is likely to express his fondness for the average pet owner. "They're very loving people," he says, "and they just want someone that's going to love their pet."
