Bixby Knolls Dental Group -- Keeping It In House
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

Dr. Abdy Moshrefi and his wife, Dr. Nazy Daneshmand, faced some formidable challenges when they opened the Bixby Knolls Dental Group nearly two years ago. The location had been a neighborhood dentist's office for 25 years before the couple took over. They were determined, however, not only live up to the legacy of the longtime family practice that was previously there, but also to update the office in a way that would allow them to offer one of the most comprehensive dental practices around.

The cozy, tastefully decorated office where the Bixby Knolls Dental Group is located provides a welcoming atmosphere for patients, which is accented by its friendly and accommodating staff.

The Bixby Knolls Dental Group provides everything from general dentistry to implants and root canals. The dentists also perform a variety of cosmetic procedures such as cosmetic fillings, veneers, teeth whitening and gum lightening.

Moshrefi describes the office as a group practice. With five doctors-two general dentists and three specialists-not only can patients get appointments usually within 48 hours, but also, just about any procedure can be performed on the premises.

"It really alleviates the necessity to refer a lot of these patients outside the office," Moshrefi said. "They're more in their comfort zone if they can stay here rather than being sent somewhere else for treatment."

It also streamlines the process of transferring files and records because the doctors are all communicating within the same office. In addition to having a highly qualified staff of doctors, the office has been equipped with some of the latest and most innovative resources available in the field. According to Moshrefi, their ability to take digital x-rays is important for several reasons.

"One main reason, is that the patients are exposed to 90 percent less radiation," Moshrefi said. "So every 10 digital x-rays is like one conventional x-ray."

Unlike film, the results of digital x-rays are ready in seconds, and the image can be manipulated to clarify certain areas. This is especially helpful when checking a patient's mouth for recurrent decay or bone density.

"Where that becomes important is where the person has periodontal disease," said Moshrefi.

Both he and his wife are specialists in the field of periodontics. According to Moshrefi, periodontal disease is one of the most chronic diseases found in the mouth and more than 80 percent of people have some form of it. Unfortunately, because it is a silent disease, it often goes undiagnosed until the patient suffers pain, bleeding, abscess or sores, he said. The most severe consequence of periodontal disease is tooth loss.

With digital x-rays, "you see over time, when you put the x-rays right next to each other, the loss in the bone density," he said. "This machine is a great diagnostic aid that very few offices have."
