Capital Investment Advisors Encourages Clients
to Put In Their 'Two Cents'
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer
A happy investor is an informed investor, according financial adviser Alan Davis of Capital Investment Advisers. Davis finds that his previous experience in customer service now serves him well when it comes to communicating and educating his clients.

"It's nice to be able to educate them," said Davis, "explain to them what they're doing, what the advantage of a particular account is and then suggest something to improve their investments."

Started as a partnership between Certified Financial Planner Emerson Fersch and Certified Public Accountant Kim Onisko, Capital Investment Advisers is a comprehensive financial planning and investment management firm that advises individuals and businesses. The company has been serving the Long Beach area for the last 11 years.

With more than 20 years of combined experience in the industry, Capital Investment offers a high level of expertise, while still maintaining the tailored personal service of a small brokerage house.

Also, as an independent planner, Capital Investment has more leeway to find the best options to fit the needs of each client. "We don't have a large parent company saying you must sell this type of product or you must recommend that type of product," Davis said. "We can go out and get them the best that there is to offer."

According to Davis, no other small firm in Long Beach has the same level of specialization all within one office. Because Capital Investment is partners with the CPA firm Onisko and Scholz, they are able to integrate financial planning with a client's tax planning.

Among their other resources is a mortgage specialist who is able to advise clients, for no extra charge, on what the best course of action is with their current mortgage.

Davis believes in spending as much time listening as he does advising. "I think one thing I definitely learned through customer service is listening to the client, see what they want and what I can do to help them," he said.

To further ensure that the company continues to meet the client's initial goals, Capital Investment meets yearly with clients to review their portfolio, as well as discuss any changes that may evolve.

"Another thing that makes us unique is that, when we meet with clients, we fully disclose all fees and commissions... basically, we put everything on the table so the client can make an informed decision," Davis said. "The clients really appreciate that honesty."

For Davis, there is a payoff inherent in making people happy and confident about their choices. "At the end of the day," he said, "I love the feeling that I've helped someone, that I've made a difference."
