Doctor Makes Life Better From the Inside Out
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer
For the past four years, Dr. Pamela Dunn, D.C., of Dunn Family Chiropractic, has focused on finding relief for her patients who suffer from low back pain. She is an award-winning chiropractor who applies a varied approach to detect the cause of pain in her patients and treats them without the use of drugs or surgery.
Although Dunn's techniques have garnered success with a great many patients, like many chiropractors, she was inevitably faced with a number of people for whom the various available therapies were not enough-these patients often faced unwanted surgeries with less than hopeful success rates.
After hearing about the space-age technology of a new FDA-approved device called the DRX9000, Dunn realized that spinal decompression therapy was the missing link in her treatments.
"I decided to start doing spinal decompression because it allowed me to help the people that I wouldn't normally be able to help because their problems are too far gone to help them chiropractically," she said.
Dunn's office now uses the DRX9000-one of only about 1300 machines in the United States-to treat patients suffering from chronic disc herniations, one or multiple disc degeneration, facet syndrome or failed low-back surgery.
According to Dunn, the technology was accidentally discovered by NASA. After periods of space travel, astronauts who left with back pain were returning from expeditions without it.
Further investigation showed that when the effects of gravity are removed, a negative pressure is created between the discs and the herniated material of a degenerated disc is actually sucked back into place. With the nutrients replaced, the disc is then allowed to heal naturally.
Although the initial observations by NASA took place in the 1970s, it has only been in the last five years that a team of top physicians and medical engineers was able to create a machine that replicates the effects of weightlessness on the spine.
Spinal decompression is no quick-fix; the five-week program usually consists of one-hour treatments, four times a week, as well as the use of a special belt and patients must abstain from strenuous activity. This non-invasive, non-surgical procedure has an 86 percent success rate that has proven to be, for some, a life-changing alternative.
"This allows me to help that sect of people that have been forgotten," said Dunn. "Being a health provider in this area, being very involved in the community and wanting to do as much as I can for Long Beach and the people who live here, my whole goal in life is to help people."
