The women of MadKat, Incorporated are committed to not only helping small businesses get off the ground, but also putting in place the necessary bookkeeping systems that will take them successfully to the next level.

Maday Nunez, Katherine Ruiz and Thierry Un worked together at a CPA firm, before deciding to team up and open MadKat Inc., an accounting and bookkeeping business that specializes in upstarts and small businesses. They also provide their services in Spanish and Cambodian.

"We're focusing on the smaller businesses because that's what we're used to doing and that's what we like to do," said Ruiz.

According to Ruiz, what sets MadKat apart is that, as bookkeepers, they have a high level of education and experience (both Ruiz and Nunez have Bachelor degrees in accounting, and all three of the women have several years experience working as bookkeepers), but are able to provide their services to clients without the overhead of a full-blown CPA firm.

By taking the time to get to know and understand their clients, MadKat is able to tailor their services to each individual business. While some require systems with a higher level of oversight and supervision, others may only need an initial consultation to set them on the right track.

"We don't have just a standard bookkeeping product. The product will fit the client," Ruiz said. "We're going to work with their needs, with their personality, with their situation."

Because many new business owners are unfamiliar with the accounting practices necessary to keep their books in order, they are often intimidated by the entire process. The women at MadKat go out of their way make clients comfortable with their accounting system. "We're very friendly, very patient, helpful and we try to make it as painless as possible," said Ruiz. "We put them at ease, we calm them down and help them to understand."

With professionalism, accuracy and consistency as their mantra, MadKat is confident about the success of their client's businesses; with a well-established bookkeeping system in place, the business owner is then free to concentrate on the focus of their service.

"For a start-up client, if we do our job really well, that enables them to do their job really well, [and] they become successful; they outgrow us," said Ruiz. "I think for us, that would be a success story, for [the client] to actually outgrow the need for us.
