Fresh Ideas Blossom at Modern Bloom
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

One look around Modern Bloom and it's no surprise that what started out as a budding hobby for Stacy Grosz has blossomed into a flourishing career.

"I left the corporate world eight years ago to be a stay-at-home mom," says Grosz. "A few years ago I started taking floral design classes with friends." While Grosz realized she really enjoyed working with flowers, it was becoming evident that she was also really good at it.

"Friends and family started requesting my floral arrangements and the business grew from there," says Grosz. She recently expanded her home operation and has now opened a storefront in the Banana Berry Marketplace.

Grosz's design style is simple and modern. She creates interesting arrangements by using a unique combination of materials. Her creative arrangements are rooted in the distinctive palette she has assembled around her.

As she gathers the things for a bouquet from around the store, she chooses her pieces like an artist picks her colors. She pulls from a colorful array of dahlias and hydrangeas, quietly elegant orchids, and earthy succulents. "I think succulents are getting really popular right now because they're great for the garden," she says.

Grosz credits her creative sensibility to having grown up around other artists; her mother is a sculptor and painter, and her sister is a painter as well. "My mom is an incredible artist," says Grosz. "I think I got my creativity through her."

The finishing touch for her arrangement is Grosz's exceptional collection of vases, many of which are one of a kind. "I've been a collector for a long time," she says. Although Grosz has an eye for unique containers, she enjoys seeing her customers add their own flair. Grosz says, "A lot of people have some treasures at home."

Grosz is shy about taking to much credit for her talents and quickly shifts the focus to others. "People who've been coming in really have a great imagination," she says. "They've been picking some really unusual things. I welcome them to do that or I can put something together for them."

The most beloved gifts are those with a personal touch and so Grosz encourages her customers to exercise their own creativity. She works hard to maintain a selection that is as unique as it is lovely. Then she steps back to watch their imaginations bloom.

Modern Bloom is located in the Banana Berry Marketplace, 1092 E. Wardlow Road. Business hours are Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, contact Stacy Grosz at (562) 841-2220 or call Banana Berry at (562) 426-1133.
