Signal Hill company does striping and more

Michael Hedges, of Pacific Striping Company, spent 16 years learning the family business from his father before taking over four years ago. Apparently, Hedges was a good student; the company has grown over 700 percent.
Pacific Striping specializes in paving, seal coating and striping. Whether it's Anheuser-Busch or the local liquor-store owner, the City of Long Beach or a Signal Hill resident, Hedges says the secret to his company's success has been its legacy of reliability, quality and affordability.
According to Hedges, the company receives numerous letters a year from satisfied customers thanking them for their timeliness and professionalism.
One of the ways Hedges is able to take command over quality-control issues is to keep all jobs in-house. This also allows the company to keep their pricing competitive. Where some smaller or younger companies cannot afford all the equipment and accessories necessary to accommodate different jobs, Pacific Striping is able to take contracts without having to "sub out" portions to other companies.
Hedges points out that by keeping all accountability in the company's hands, it behooves them to get the job done well and right the first time. If problems do arise, however, he's on top of it.
"If something doesn't get done to the customer's satisfaction or something was left out," he says, "we try our best to get back to them within twenty-four hours to resolve any issues the customer might have had."
Hedges believes reliability is a particularly crucial attribute in his line of business. "This industry, construction in general, is notorious for people marching to the beat of their own drum," says Hedges.
"We focus on punctuality. If we say we're going to be there at 6, we're there at 6."
Pacific Striping has done jobs for such prestigious accounts as Target, Whiting-Turner, Kajima, U.S. Postal Service and the National Hot Rod Association. But Hedges is sensitive to the needs of his smaller clients as well, many of whom are unaware their parking lots are not compliant with American Disability Act (ADA) regulations until it's too late.
"We get [calls from small business owners] and they have no clue, all they know is they're getting sued and it needs to go away," says Hedges. "Most of the time we're able to go out there and, for a few hundred dollars, bring them compliant, and they think the world of that."
