The Phoenix Coffeehouse rises out of fertile grounds

Neither Sam and Satia Sieng nor the huge space they recently remodeled are new to the coffee business. The Siengs formerly owned the popular Library Coffeehouse in Belmont Heights. They recently opened their newest coffee venture in the space that has been caffeinating the residents of Bixby Knolls for well over a decade, first as the Coffee Tavern, then Fendi's and now, under the creative guidance of the Siengs and their staff, The Phoenix Coffeehouse.
With the help of their employees, the Siengs have breathed new life into the three themed rooms that make up the 3,000-square-foot storefront. Fresh paint, new and newly upholstered furniture, photographs and lots of plants highlight the space's high ceilings and make great use of abundant natural light.
The "welcome room" is inviting and homey. The beamed ceilings and arts-and-crafts colors set off the originality of the stained-wood mosaic tiles adorning the front counter. The piece was designed and built by Phoenix Manager Adam Pogue and employee Phi Lam.
"We call Adam our Michelangelo," says Saita.
It was Pouge, a former graphic design student, who came up with the idea to frame and hang old photos torn from travel books found in storage. The books date back to the building's history as a Greyhound bus station. Pouge intends to eventually incorporate into the décor the vintage luggage found, along with the books, on the premises.
Although the "garden room" is a still a work in progress, the impressive skylight is sure to provide plenty of nourishing sunlight to the plants that will eventually cover the massive wall from which they hang.
"The plants provide oxygen," says Lam. "It's good for the mind."
A fountain is also in the works for the "garden room." It will sit opposite a roomy stage already in place. Although the stage is currently being used for poetry readings and musical entertainment, the indoor flora oasis will soon feature free movie screenings.
The "Victorian room" is the coziest and quietest of the three rooms. More of a "study" than a gathering place, the large mirrors and period furniture are perfect for those looking for a place conducive to quiet contemplation. The rented mailboxes, one of the more novel amenities Phoenix offers patron, are also located in the "Victorian room."
The Phoenix Coffeehouse hosts its official grand opening this Saturday, March 4 from 5 p.m. to close. The celebration will include music by acoustic artists Kim Poblete and Kevin Wood. Patrons are invited to come meet their new neighbors and enjoy free food and coffee.
Phoenix is located at 539 East Bixby Road in Bixby Knolls. For more information, call (562) 424-4774.
