New salon offers unique style and chic ambiance
By Ofelia Saenz, Signal Tribune staff writer

Studio K may be the new kid on the block, but owner/stylist Kristian Lewis believes she has something special to offer the residents of Signal Hill. For the last nine months, the diverse staff at Studio K has been fashioning their multi-ethnic clientele using the latest trends in cut, color and styling techniques in a unique and stylish atmosphere.

"We pride ourselves on providing a calm and relaxing atmosphere," says Lewis. When clients arrive for their hair appointment, the stylist takes the time to discuss in detail the individual's particular needs and expectations. After that, Studio K guests are treated to a complimentary essential oil scalp massage (except those undergoing color treatment). The hip music and chic décor add to the salon's stylish but comfortable ambiance.

Lewis is a 15-year veteran of the industry. She studied and apprenticed in Germany before becoming licensed in California. "In Europe," says Lewis, "you really have to spend a long time [three years] paying your dues as an apprentice before any salon is allowed to hire you. That's in addition to their school's extensive training. The advantage to the client is that by the time you hit the floor [as a stylist] you've got a lot of experience under your belt."

Lewis has worked in salons in Europe and the United States as well as having been a stylist for film and television, but her true passion has always been the social aspect of owning her own salon. "I want to change the way people think about our industry," says Lewis. Her official grand opening--which will actually take place on their one-year anniversary in March--will be a combination opening gala and art show. "I love Signal Hill," says Lewis of her salon's new home. "I'm proud to be a part of the city."

As for the talent of the Studio K crew, no one has better things to say than their customers. "They do every single ethnic group here," says client Ophelia Griffin, who has been following Lewis for years. "That's not easy. She [Lewis] is really good at understanding the needs of different ethnic groups. She knows a lot about texture."

Kelly Killoren, another faithful client, says the stylists at Studio K are very intuitive. "You leave here feeling very self-confident, very beautiful."

Studio K is located at 2725 East Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 204. For an appointment call (562) 498-6372.
